• Open source dictionary – StarDict

    Need a dictionary, thesaurus, translator? StarDict works well for all of these purposes.  Install this program on a Linux or Windows machine and just add free dictionary databases to it.

    StarDict main window

    StarDict does some pretty interesting things such as:

    • translates with google or yahoo engines;

    StarDict translate

    • uses a “glob-style pattern matching” to find associated words

    StarDict matching

    • plus more functions such as direct access to the web based Net Dict, and what is called “fuzzy query” (I don’t know what this last one actually does but I like the term).

    I’m pretty happy with this program on both Windows and Linux. It is faster to use then going to a website and the amount of free dictionaries available are more then enough for me.

      Thank You.

      @physica, I logged my StarDict on Windows and it does this for the words I searched. On my Ubuntu it doesn’t. I believe it works through NetDict dictionary I installed, but I may be wrong. It has been a long time since I’ve installed it. :)

      Someone should make a Firefox extension for this! Just highlight a word, e.g with a double click and get at simple and clean box with definitions (language or other) set by the user. Stardicts database is stored locally, so response would be quick.

      I know nothing about programming myself, so if you are and you make it I WILL send you flowers ,)

      I am so happy to read this. This is the type of manual that needs to be given and not the accidental misinformation that is at the other blogs. Appreciate your sharing this best doc.
